Social Media Update – Facebook Reduces Implicit Updates

Facebook announced today that the company is taking measures to reduce third-party automatic updates (also known as implicit updates).

An implicit update occurs when third-party apps such as Shazam or Pinterest automatically post updates to a user’s Facebook Profile.

Previously, implicit updates were posted to both a user’s timeline and could also be viewed in the ¬†ticker feed (or as we like to call it, the creeper feed) which is located in the upper right hand corner of a standard profile.

Going forward, Facebook will now place higher preference towards “explicit” updates. Explicit updates occur when a user intentionally posts from a third-party app to Facebook.
