The Web Design and Development Process

What does the web design or web development process look like exactly for a business that embarks on the adventure of creating an online presence? What can you expect from your web designer? What should you try to avoid?

At Full Blast Creative, a Calgary web design agency, we have developed thousands of custom websites for Calgary businesses, as well as national and international brands alike. Every website design project follows a predictable path. We’ve highlighted that journey for you and are happy to share the key phases you will experience during a website build or website re-design.

Web Design Planning, Strategy and Research

Once Full Blast Creative has been engaged on a website design or website development project, we connect with the organization to understand the website function, vision, business goals and design needs as noted by the client.

It’s important to note that the web design process is a collaboration between our team and yours. We need to work together, with one shared vision, to ensure your website project moves from an idea to a live website online.

This requires continuous communication between your team and our design and development teams. We’ll look at design concepts, prototypes, website functionality, calls to action, landing pages and much, much, more. We’ll look at the language on your website and the communication or voice of your brand to understand how it might be perceived by your website visitors. We’ll consider every aspect of your web design needs that might impact the success of your project.

You will have to make decisions on preliminary designs, notes, and mockups then offer constructive feedback to our team so that we can make the necessary revisions or adjustments. Your feedback is essential in this process! The more feedback we receive, the more successful the website design and website development is because your insight assists us in the creative process.

Web Design Creative Process

With all the rich creative feedback you’ve provided during the discovery and strategy phase, the Full Blast Creative website design team hunkers down and begins to create mockups or prototypes of your website for your consideration. This task is done first as a graphic via PDF or design file which we provide to you through our website project management tool – Basecamp. Once we’ve arrived at a design style that fits your brand and aesthetic, you will need to sign off on the completed design idea. Your signature or approval moves the website development project into the next phase – technical development.

Technical Development – Website Code

There are a variety of programming languages that your website could be developed in. One of the most common frameworks is WordPress. Over 90% of the websites Full Blast Creative designs and develops tap into WordPress although we also design in Drupal, Joomla, custom and many more programming languages. The type of programming language used is dependent on the needs and functionality of your website. Armed with our website strategy and creative, we will begin to deploy, customize and apply the custom design to your website. A mix of PHP, HTML and CSS development is usually done during this phase, which ensures the web-ready version of your new website matches the design files.

We will also ensure that the website is optimized for mobile use on smartphones and tablets by using a Responsive Design approach to website development.

Lastly, the website technical development stage is the stage that the new site is populated with its content, media assets and all links, keyword/page optimization or other detailed development tasks, which results in a completed online preview of your website! It’s a very exciting time for business owners who have worked through the constant communication and feedback between our team and yours.

Website Testing and Review

With the preview site available for your review, Full Blast Creative undertakes an extensive website testing routine to ensure the website performs and displays well in all major browsers and operating systems including Firefox, Safari, and Chrome. We further test the site on a number of mobile devices including popular Android and iOS devices and a variety of screen resolutions.

Full Blast Creative also crowdsources this phase among our network of website testers who range in age, user experience, device type, browser versions, etc. This often provides us with honest user feedback resulting in adjustments that aides in creating a better user experience.

Launching Your New Website

Once your new website has been reviewed, revised and tested by both your team and ours, we work with your team to launch the website to the wider public. We can assign a specific date and time, or we can await your go ahead to turn it live. This process can take up to 72 hours for DNS changes or hosting switches as we move from the development server to the permanent server. Sometimes additional adjustments to the code are required following the migration to the native server which may have a different nuance of settings or requirements. We’ll be on hand to assist you and to see to any corrections that are required.

What about Website Production Timelines?
